Behind the Lens: Dreaming of the Someday Studio & Gallery

You Might Say That I'm a Dreamer - John Lennon

Okay, anyone who knows me knows one thing....I'm a dreamer!

I dream big dreams for myself and for the others around me. I do it all day long.

Every once in a while though, one of these dreams doesn't just pass by like daydreams so often do. It sticks. It stays in the back of my mind. Living, Breathing, and Growing there.

This is how my dream studio (the 'someday' studio) came to be.

As a photographer, I dream of having a space to showcase my work, welcome new faces, create artwork, and celebrate the life and love of others through my photography everyday.

When I first started to dream of my own space I started small. A small reception area with a few images on the wall, a comfy couch to sit in, and maybe a small desk for the assistant I'd someday have greeting clients as they arrived. These dreams were small and came and went without too much extra thought.

Then one day, while discussing the idea with my spouse, he came out and said...."with a gallery space right?"

Just like that, it went from small day dream to complete obsession. Why not have a gallery to showcase not only my work but the art of other photographers and artists in the area? Would we offer a workshop space too? A studio for rent? Pretty soon this thing was massive! An art gallery, a teaching classroom or two, offices, multiple studios...it just grew and grew with all the potential!

After a few days of this madness, I began to reign it in a bit. What did I really want? What would be essential to having my business serve my clients and my staff in the way I dreamed? How could I create the experience I dreamed of providing my clients. And from here the someday studio and gallery were born.

I began with a list of things that would help me meet my clients needs. Then, a list of things I needed to do my job well for clients. Then, a list of the ways I could step up my clients experience and meet the image I have imagined for my photography on both the wedding & portrait, as well as, the fine art sides.

This list became bigger ideas. The ideas became a floor plan. And now, a little over a year later, this dream has grown to something so real that I can tell you the look, the feel, even the smells of the place. I know the colours the walls will be painted. The furniture for each space within it. The books on my shelves. The fabric on the sofa, the curtains and more.

Today I sit here with a vision of what my studio and gallery will be, and it's so real that I know that someday isn't really that far away!
