Today I'm thrilled to have an interview with one of my local inspirations... I hope you enjoy learning more about Love Nest Designs as much as I did!

Tell us about what Love Nest Design is

Love Nest Design actually began as an Interior Design blog.  The name came about when my husband and I purchased a new home that needed a lot of….help.  Aesthetically.  We were bound and bent to turn it into our perfect little paradise!

As an Interior Designer I could not wait to dive right in, and my super handy husband was completely on board.  The blog became a way to document and share our experiences, as we updated our 1970’s two-storey, into something a little more our style.  About a year into the blog (and the renovations!) I decided to begin my own Interior Design Services Company.  After graduating from the Fanshawe Interior Design program and working in the industry, it was time for a little more creative control.  The blog evolved into the company it is today, and the renovating continues….

Where do you go for inspiration?

Fabric and function.  I can spend many hours perusing page after page of gorgeous fabric prints and patterns.  It is often the jumping off point for a room design.

I find my most motivating form of inspiration is FUNCTION.  I am constantly looking for ways to make the world around me easier to navigate.  The better your environment caters to your needs, functionally, the more productive and less stressed you are able to be. This means a place for everything, and everything in its place.  Even the wrong color can prevent a space from functioning properly for a person.  If it doesn’t make you feel good, it doesn’t function for you. Design IS function, folks!

What is your favourite part of what you do?

The diversity of the business.  One minute I might be choosing fabrics for a custom piece of furniture, the next space planning for a retail environment.  Each project is different, it keeps things interesting!

Biggest piece of advice for someone ready to revamp their home?

Have a plan

Have a concrete design before you start, and a step-by-step plan to make it happen.  A designer is skilled in providing a functional design, and can provide project management to keep the renovation on track.

Expect surprises.

Even with the most careful planning, unexpected issues can arise, especially if your renovation involves ripping out walls or flooring.  If you prepare yourself for possible set backs, both in your timeline and budget, the process is much easier to navigate.

Enjoy the process.

There are so many options out there!  Don’t let them overwhelm you!  Stick to timeless styles for expensive items you aren’t likely to replace, and show your personal style with accent items that you are willing to change out in a few years if your style preference changes.

If you could sit down to coffee one on one with anyone in the world, who would it be?

This is a tough one! I suppose I’d have to say either; Sarah Richardson, Jann Arden, or Margaret Atwood.  All three are down to earth, proud to be Canadian, women who are not afraid to go after what they want, but do so with grace, and integrity.  Now, that is something to aspire to.

Huge thank you to Allison Cooper from Love Nest Designs for sharing her time with us today.
