I am lucky enough to be only one of two people passionate about photography in my household.
I get excited about new technology, new lighting, and new posing techniques. They open such a world of possibilities to us all.
My spouse on the other hand gets excited about holding a piece of history in his hands. He gets excited by an old camera sitting on an antique shop shelf or a mostly forgotten art form of darkroom development and print making. He talked for days after taking a workshop in the techniques of wet plate photography. And lights up as he watches an image appear in his developing trays in his dark room.
I do not have the background with film he does, nor does it ignite such passion in me. That said, it doesn't mean he hasn't tried.
I enjoy our camera collection, and all that it represents for our family. I think it's great fun for us to each choose a camera off the shelf and a roll of film from the freezer as we head off on a photography adventure. I am thankful to have my daughter get excited about the possibilities and about the time spent in the darkroom with Ross developing the images we've just captured. So, last year I did it, I finally stepped into the darkroom and made my first manual print from my own film image.
I admit, there is something pretty amazing about watching the image appear seemingly from no where in the tray of clear chemicals.
Today I'm happy to share my first complete manual developed at home photograph.
It may not be my finest work but there's time spent with family and memories there!
