Behind the Scenes of my Business Blog Tag!

This blog post is a part of the ‘Behind the Scenes of My Business’ Blog Tag started by April of Blacksburg Belle. She began this blog tag experiment to build community among creatives, help us bloggers to connect more and get to know each other better. This month’s topic is all about sharing the behind the scenes stuff of our businesses. If you’d like to participate or want more info, check out this post right here.

Question 1: What’s your two to three sentence bio? (You know, what the heck do you do?)

I am the creative director & photographic artist behind Rebecca Nash Photography.

Rebecca Nash Photography is a high end, experience driven wedding photography studio focused on creating the first family heirlooms and memories to cherish for London area couples.

Question 2: What’s your favorite part of your job?

I love meeting couples, hearing their stories (how they met, what they do, their vision for their wedding, etc), and being able to help someone celebrate their wedding day!

Question 3: What’s your least favorite part of your job?

Bookkeeping! I know it's a necessary part of the job but man, inputting all the numbers drives me a little crazy.

Question 4: What are the top three tools you use the most in your work?

I'm going to go with my Nikon D3s (with lenses of course), my desktop computer, and my phone.

Question 5: What business goal would you love to reach before the end of the year?

My goal would be to create a resource of information from my experiences as both a wedding photographer and as a bride, as well as inspiration for the wedding day accessible to all brides right here.

Whether a bride books me or not, I want to do what I can to help them have the best possible experience.

Question 6: Who are three creatives that inspire you?

Three creatives...I can't pick just three. A few creatives that inspire me (and who's blogs I therefore stalk) are Sal Cincotta, Jasmine Star, Sue Bryce, Susan Stripling, and Zach & Jody Gray

Question 7: What do you listen to (if anything) while you work?

When I'm editing a portrait session, it's all about the upbeat somewhat pop like or country music if I'm listening to music.

When I'm editing a wedding, it's more likely to be a mix of energetic songs and something with a little more romance.

The reality, however, is that the soundtrack to my life is usually CreativeLive.

Question 8: Morning person or night owl?

Well, it's 6:27am here and I've already had breakfast, gotten dressed, etc and don't have to be anywhere til 9am. Does that answer it?

Question 9: How many employees do you have and what are the main things they do for you?

3. Me, Myself, and I

No but seriously, at the moment I am the chief everything officer over here but hire out some jobs as needed.

I'm looking forward to adding an assistant in the near future as well as a regular second shooter (as opposed to contracting one of the people on my short list)

Question 10: What’s your favorite social media platform?

Personally, I'm completely head over heels addicted to Pinterest. I love checking out Instagram too (and really should be better at using this platform)

Professionally, I'm learning google + and all of that but facebook is definitely still my social media home.

Question 11: What’s your least favorite social media platform?

I'm going to have to echo April on this one, I don't really understand, and therefore don't really use, LinkedIn. That said, it is a goal to learn it better because I don't want to discount it when I haven't really tried it

Question 12: What works best when it comes to marketing your business?

The best marketing both for usefulness and just all around knowing how it's going is definitely meeting people in person (I'm working on telling people what I do in conversation more when there's a possibility) and my awesome clients sharing me by word of mouth, by sharing their photos, by posting on social media.

Question 13: What’s one thing about your business that your blog readers probably don’t know?

I don't consider myself to be in the photography business. Yes I am an artist but, my job is to help my clients plan, celebrate, enjoy, and remember their wedding day. At the end of the day I'm in the business of helping people and there's no better business, my photography is just the best way I know how to help them celebrate.

What do I mean? I have helped them find vendors, laced brides into gowns, fixed accessories, decorated getaway cars, and even taken a bride dress shopping. It's their day to celebrate and want it to be full of nothing but amazing memories so if they need help, I will be there to do all I can.

Question 14: If your business were a fashion accessory, what would it be?

Okay this is a really cool question.

My first instinct was to say a strand of pearls. Elegant and classy.

Then I thought a little more (while typing all the answers above) and realized my business is more like a diamond ring. How?

Well a diamond ring often comes from investing time and energy into building a beautiful relationship. Likewise, great wedding photography comes from building a great relationship with not only your spouse by the professional you are working with also. It's because of this that I take the time to get together with every client and get to know them so that on the wedding day it's not some stranger photographing them but more of a trusted friend.

A diamond ring also takes a financial investment, so does my photography. Why? I put a lot of time, energy, and myself into working with a wedding client right from the first consultation through engagement portrait shoots, the wedding day, the editing & design process, and through to delivery so I only accept a limited number of bookings each year. I'd rather work with a few amazing clients and give them the best possible experience than trying to fit in everyone I can and only doing so-so.

One more similarity (but I could probably go on for a lot longer) is when you buy a diamond, you buy it for life. You think of it as an item that you will have for a lifetime and will be part of the legacy you leave behind. When I create artwork for my clients, whether it be wall art or a custom designed album, I am conscious of the fact that this will be their first family heirloom that will be passed down. It will tell the story of who they are, how they came to be a family, and what their love was like. There's is no greater gift I can give!

Question 15: What’s your top tip for someone who wants to do something similar to you for a career?

Get any illusions of a glamorous life out of your head.

You will work hard every day, you will have to keep learning and adapting, and it will be a struggle sometimes, but, if you love helping people and have a passion for creating art it can be one of the most rewarding and fulfilling things you ever do!
