Road Tripping - St Louis, MO Round Two for 2016

Here we go!

It's Road tripping round two (okay actually three) for the summer and I'm off to the St Louis area to visit friends and fellow photographers along the way.

Why do trips like this matter?

It's a great way to stay connected with friends.

A change of scenery keeps me fresh.

Sometimes it takes someone else to help you see things in a new way.

I want to stay connected with my industry, my peers, and my suppliers.

This week I'm off to meet up with the team behind one of my favourite conferences, Shutterfest, as well as some of my suppliers for albums, print products like metals and those awesome acylic blocks I have fallen in love with,  design and post-production outsourcing, and more.

Keep an eye on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat (@RNashPhoto) to see the behind the scenes of what's happening!

Jess & Kevin's Beach Engagement

PortFranksEngagementSessionJessAndKevin20160618DSC_1324303

Last week I had the pleasure of spending my Saturday Night with two AMAZING people.

Are you likely to see them on the news or watch people clamor to take a selfie with them? Maybe not, but to me they are heros. Why?

To see the woman Jessica is, how she has pushed through every obstacle and health struggle that has been placed in her path but only came out stronger, kinder and more loving. To see the way Kevin looks at Jessica with love...a lovethat has seen her struggle and stood by her side from a man that stands by her side ready to carry her when she's not sure she can take another step, to put her feet back on her path, who is ready not to walk ahead or trail behind but always be the man standing beside her facing life's struggles and celebrating life's beauty together every step of the way.

Before I get too carried away and I lose sight of my screen for the tears of love and joy for these two (yep- I am that sappy/emotional) I want to hand it over to Jessica & Kevin to tell you a little bit more about who they are.

In their words...

How long have you known each other? 2 years

How did you meet?

We met online! It's embarrassing, but becoming the norm for meeting people. Our first meeting was magical! When did you know your fiance was 'the one'? (both answer please) We both knew on our first meeting that there was something very special between us. We had a magical first date which included a beautiful drive, a walk on the beach, dinner and fireworks on the beach. After that first date, we were inseparable. Soulmates. We would ready to get married that first week together.

What is your favourite thing about your fiance? My favourite thing about Kevin is his kind and gentle spirit; he is very sweet and caring. - Jess

My favourite thing about Jessica is her empathetic ways. - Kevin

What do you love to do together? We love to sit at home together and watch movies or binge on a good TV series. We also love our family time. When we have both our children (Aiden and Jillian) at the house, we enjoy spending time at the park. We are very low key!

Is there anything else you'd like to share? We both feel complete and have feelings of wholeness as a family since finding each other. We are truly blessed. Not everyone finds their soulmate, their other half! The one who understands them on that other level!

Port Frank's Sunset Beach Engagement Portraits - Jessica & Kevin's Engagement Sneak Peek

Sunset in Port Franks with Jessica & Kevin for their Engagement Portrait session

I still remember opening up my email to find an inquiry from someone named Jessica. She was inquiring about my wedding photography services.

The more we chatted, the more it felt like this was someone that I was meant to serve. Jessica is a beautiful, kind, and loving woman who has faced many struggles in her life but she and her fiance Kevin had weathered them. It was these struggles that connected Jessica and I even more. Not just as photographer and bride, but as friends who understood at least some of what the other had been through.

Together with their children, I am excited to be sharing this journey with Jessica & Kevin. I can't wait to celebrate their marriage with them in October. I know it's going to be a very personal and emotional day.

For today, just one little teaser image. Keep your eyes out for more of their engagement portrait session and their story coming very soon.

Living in the Present - Motivation Monday

IMG_0073

I don't know about you but on any given day I have a list of regrets from the past and goals for the future that I carry around with me.

If only I had done... If only I hadn't said.... If I had just tried to... When I get... When I tick off this goal...

Someday's it is so hard to stay focused on the hear and now.

Now, I'm not debating the power of goals or the importance of regrets if you have done something wrong but, where you are standing right now is a result of goals you set and may or may not have achieved. Why shouldn't you enjoy it, live it, and be present?

Where you are standing right now will be the moment you may soon regret for something you did or didn't do. So do it!

A goal can wait a few hours or days and I don't know about you but, I would rather regret something I tried and didn't work out instead of something I didn't have the guts to try.

Will you be present today? How will you be present? Tell me in the comments below!

I'm taking part in a Getting-to-Know-You game of 20 Questions with Kris (With a K)

I'm super late to the game but excited to continue the getting to know each other theme so...I’m participating in a Getting-to-Know-You game of 20 Questions with Kris (With a K) from the With a K Writing Academy. I’m excited to get to know my own blog-readers better & to find other bloggers to play with too. You know – friends who just get it. If you want to participate, you can too! Just go to check out Kris’s post about it here, & get started.

1 – What’s a ridiculous nickname you’ve had?

Not sure that I ever had a ridiculous name but the most common ones are definitely Becky, Bex, Beckers, Becky Boo or just Boo.

2 – Why do you write a blog? Have your reasons changed over time?

When I started out blogging it was just one of those things I thought I should do plus I had always loved to read and to write.

Now I realize that the blog has the power to be so much more. It's an opportunity to connect with people, to help people during one of the most exciting, but sometimes stressful, times as they plan their wedding day, and a place to share so much from images to advice, to share personal stories and client love stories and so much more!

3 – Where do you like to be when you are writing?

I honestly write most often from my couch or desk at home but I do my best writing when I can get out - whether for the writing or just before I write - for a change of scenery, a dose of inspiration and a little fresh air to clear the normal to do's out of my brain and be able to really enjoy the writing process.

This is something I'm really looking forward to this year, creating a space to write in that will be filled with creativity and continue to build my skills to really bring together words and imagery to help people get to know the amazing people, clients and colleagues, the way I do. They are amazing people and I want to make sure I do their stories justice.

4 – Peanut butter & __________.

CHOCOLATE!!! Was this seriously in question? Hello Chocoholic Queen right here.

5. What does your Writing Process look like?

Sometimes it starts with a few notes scribbled down (digitally or physically) or an image that I'm just in love with and inspires me to write the story or a piece of wedding advice that it brings to mind. Other times it comes from questions my clients ask or a quick questionaire they've filled out.

Overall, there isn't much of a process. I sit down and write a first draft trying my hardest not to filter my thoughts and my voice too much (if I overthink too much it all comes out professional and overly formal or robotic, there's not personality left!) The second read through is about polishing it up a little and making sure it all makes sense and captures what I want to say (I'm notoriously bad for getting really excited about something I'm writing and skipping words in the middle of sentences - I'm not the only one right?)

6 – What keeps you up at night?

EVERYTHING! My brain seriously doesn't have an off switch and it's a real problem sometimes but, I learned a long time ago to keep a pen and notebook beside the bed to write down ideas or things I need to do so I don't have to worry about forgetting them as well as keeping the phone out of the bedroom because resisting the urge to check it can been so hard!

7 – What was your last online purchase? Did you hide it from anyone? (I see you, impulse buyers & shame shoppers)

My last online purchase...was a book! I am a complete book addict and it's probably a good thing my bank account doesn't allow me to buy my whole wishlist. We don't own enough bookshelves for that!

8 – What do you honestly think of elastic waistbands?

To most of my more fashionable friends I would say only for workouts but as an entrepreneur - when I'm working from home I am rocking elastic waistbands for sure in the form of yoga pants or pj pants most of the time. I just love to be comfy.

9 – What blogs or magazines do you love to read? Why?

I am completely obsessed with Magazines in a few different categories. Here are my current favs by category

Photography - Shutter Magazine

Weddings - Wedluxe, Elegant Weddings, Trendy Bride, Grace Ormond Weddings (I pick up others too but those are my can't miss mags)

Fashion - InStyle

Home Decor - HGTV, Style at Home, Canadian House and Home

Fitness/Health - Oxygen, Shape, Women's Health, Clean Eating

I love them all for inspiration, information I can use, and good writing (I like stories)

10 – What is your favourite way to express your creativity?

Photography for sure.

I have always loved to create but my hands always failed to create what I saw in my minds eye but with my camera in my hand I found the joy of creating again.

I love to dabble with scrapbooking, watercolour painting, and calligraphy too

11 – DSLR or iPhone?

I always prefer to work with my DSLR or even one of our film cameras but the best camera is always the one you have with you so I end up using my phone (though not an iphone - I'm not a big apple fan overall but love my ipad)

12 – How do you feel about the semicolon? Do you have any feelings about punctuation marks, in general? (it’s ok if you don’t)

I love exclamation marks because I tend to be excited and energetic in most of my writing but I don't really have any feelings about other punctuation marks.

13 – What is a skill you really want to learn?

Just one? I love learning new skills.

I am currently working on watercolour painting and calligraphy but also want to learn sketch noting, scuba diving, and drawing.

14 – Do you use a planner or journal to keep your life from derailing? What kind?

Not yet but I'm on the search for one that works for me. Always open to suggestions!

15 – What does your dream Sunday look like?

A big brunch, time with awesome people or curled up with a blanket and a book in front of a big window.

16 – Do you have a full-time business or a side hustle?

It's a full time business on top of a full-time day job. I love working with the kids in my class but I could never give up my photography. It's a passion for sure.

17 – Coffee or tea?

Neither - I'm a hot chocolate girl.

18 – What is your favourite outfit?

19 – What scares you?

Disappointing the people I care about - my family, my clients, my colleagues.

I love to help people and always worry I will disappoint people.

20 – Cats or Dogs?

I love both but right now I'm snuggling with my puppy Kowa (named after one of our cameras) so I'm going to have to go with dogs today.

Did you learn anything new? I would love to see you join in and share your answers to these 20 Questions so I can learn more about you!

Time to reflect

*Warning, long winded personal post ahead.*

20160112_103013~2

This past month or so, the blog has been quiet.

It's been a time of reflection. It's been a time of self-care.

In 2015 I was blessed with so many wonderful things happening including some of the most inspiring educational experiences, collaborating with amazing people in the wedding industry, changes in my business in the services and the products I offer, the growth of the London Wedding Professionals, changes in my personal life as well as day job (yep, still have one of those for nor working with some absolutely fabulous students and their families) and so much more. I could not be more grateful to the fantastic clients and colleagues (as well as of course an amazingly supportive husband and encouraging daughter) who have been here supporting me, cheering me on, and forgiving me when I occasionally stumble along the way.

Sadly, all of these amazing opportunities (and my inability to say no to some of it) put me in a situation where as of the beginning of this year I have needed to take some time off.

I want so badly to be the best wife, mother, friend, photographer, mentor, teacher and so much more to everyone in my life and in my efforts to do everything I could to please everyone, I found it difficult to please anyone. At the end of the year, I couldn't help anyone because I had neglected to take care of myself.

I recently watched a webinar with Vanessa Joy. She spoke about photography, workflow, and marketing of course but the part that impacted me most was when she spoke about finding balance, about self-care, and about staying focused on your 'why' and your definition of success. She also reminded me that "when you say yes to something, you are saying no to everything else".

To some this might not seem like much of a revelation but to me it was. By always saying yes to everything I was asked to do, I ended up saying no to some of the things that mattered most. I often ended up saying no to family time, no to taking care of myself (physically, mentally and spiritually), no to giving my clients the very best I can, and no to the huge growth as a person, an artist, and so much more.

This year it's about being deliberate. It about figuring out why my why is, what my vision of success is, and comparing every opportunity I am offered to those two important pieces of information and asking...does this get me closer?

Why am I sharing this with you today you? Why would my brides, my fellow photographers or wedding industry colleagues care? It's about taking time to reflect and setting priorities which is something I think we can all relate to but more than anything I am sharing today because I want to be open with you.

Yes I there are changes coming and maybe this information will make it easier to understand where I am coming from. I have talked so many times in so many different ways about the kind of relationships I want to build with readers, clients, colleagues and beyond but if I want these to be real friendships I need to be willing to be open with you. To help you understand who I am, what I stand for, and what I believe.

Now I ask you, what has the first 6 weeks of 2016 brought to you? What has it meant? Please share with me in the comments below and know I will be here reading your comments and eager to learn a little more about you!

You Rocked the London Bridal Expo

Rebecca Nash Photography at the London Bridal Expo January 2016 Oh my goodness...can we talk about the London Bridal Expo for a minute please? It was AMAZING!

The venue was great (the new location is way more spacious which seemed to make all the guests more comfortable and the vendors too), the weather was good (no brutal cold or huge piles of snow though we did get a little rain), and the brides & their entourages. I don't even know what to say about you guys!

All the brides were just fabulous. You were excited (and sometimes overwhelmed) about the show and your upcoming wedding day. You came with great questions and took the time to really talk to us crazy vendors. You had a vision of your perfect wedding day and what's most important to you on your big day.

I just loved getting to meet you and hear your stories. Getting to meet amazing people, hear their stories and help them celebrate their love story is the reason I got into wedding photography here in London to begin with.

Today I just wanted to say a huge THANK YOU to each and every one of you that took the time to visit me at the show. You guys made the weekend just fabulous!

Congratulations to each and every one of you on your engagement and upcoming wedding!

If it's half as amazing as you were this weekend, you are going to blow people away!

Yours Enthusiastically,

What is a photo to you?

London Photographer Rebecca Nash - Engagement PortraitsApril 11, 2015-3 Is it just a file?

Is it a small print in a box somewhere?

Is it a moment captured? A memory?

Is it a piece of artwork on your wall?

What is a photo to you?

I came across this piece by fellow photographer Michelle Celetano over a year ago now and it really struck a chord with me and changed my perspective and the way I care for my clients. It renewed my passion for not just creating image files, but to create artwork that my couples can hold in their hands and cherish.

I believe

By Michelle Celetano

I believe in photography - but more than that I believe in photographs.  Printed photographs are tangible. We can hold on to them, pass them around, frame them and hang them on a wall.  We can make albums to be treasured and looked through by children for years to come.

We can’t touch a file and the truth is we don’t know the longevity of a file or if we will even be able to find it someday.  A digital file is a bit of a mystery - if it’s lost, where did it go.  If a drive is damaged what happens to the files?  How many people truly back up all their images?

What happened to disc cameras, eight track tapes, Walkman's and other technology we thought would last forever?   What will our children be looking at in 20 or 30 years?  Photographs are special - files are not!

I believe in printing my work professionally. I believe my work is more than a screen saver.  Years of studying and perfecting my craft comes down to more than sending files via the internet.

The photographs I create for my clients are not only precious to my clients but they are precious to me.  It is my work, a lifetime of work that deserves to be printed.

Photographs are passed on to children and grandchildren.  Can you imagine a floppy disk, a DVD or a flash drive sitting in a frame representing your family portraits?

Like many photographers I have struggled with bending to the needs or wants of a clientele that is looking for files.  But this is what I discovered over the last year - It makes me uncomfortable in the center of my gut to hand over digital files no matter the price.  Clients have told me that the DVD is still sitting on a desk and they should have had me make the prints in the first place because they never have time to get to it.

I wonder about those files that were sold.... How were they printed?  Did the client crop it too tight?  Is the color correct?  Did they attempt to alter the image?  It troubles me because I put so much of myself into my work.   And, I have to wonder... am I really acting as a professional and serving my client the best way I know how to by simply selling intangible files that may never be printed?

For some, it’s easy.... take some photos, edit them, burn them on a disk or flash-drive and make a few bucks.  I don’t and can’t operate that way - I care too much about my work, my clients and future generations that might have no photographs because I wanted to make fast and easy money selling files.

I’m taking a stand!  I am a photographer! I am without a doubt passionate about creating photographs - real pictures - printed on professional papers - and made into beautiful albums.  I want your children, their children, my children and future grandchildren looking at and holding onto photographs not the latest greatest gadget.

It has taken deep soul searching, a lot of thought and time to define the value of my work. I am taking a stand against selling files and taking a strong stand for printing my photographs.

If being a business owner and photographer today means the current market will force me to sell files not photographs and to compromise my work and my values - well then, I’m out.

But, that won’t happen!  I know it won’t because I know there are people and clients who value my work, understand and respect the value I have placed on my work and actually want photographs.

I am Michele Celentano , a professional photographer - I believe in and value photography and the images we leave for our children.  My work and your portraits will be professionally printed to my standards, they will be available to frame and look at in albums...

The portraits I create for you will not become a part of your screen saver slide show.  I have worked too hard and taken too much pride in my work for that to happen.  I will not take the risk that in 20 years we will be a generation of lost photographs.

There I stand!

I believe that you matter, that the photographs that celebrate your life are pieces of art that matter to my clients but matter that much more to the people who love them now and those who will be looking back on those moments with love for the people they see.

I am an artist. I am storyteller. I am a keeper of stories and memories. I am a Photographer!
