A New Space, A New Chapter

It's been a few months since we moved out of the Photographer's Studio and things have been a bit quiet around here. First it was back to school, and now it's been all about getting in and getting the new space ready.

We've spent the last few weeks patching, prepping and painting the walls, replacing trim, picking out furniture, moving in and more but it's almost done!

Today I'm thrilled to invite each and every one of you to join us in studio on Saturday November 25th from 4:00pm - 9:00pm to check out the new space, catch up on what's new, and celebrate the start of a new chapter in our journey.

I can't wait to see you there!

Hop over to the facebook event to RSVP or email me at info@rebeccanashphotography.com

Can't make it? Make sure you check out the Event Page too, I'll be sharing photos and live videos from the event.

Finding my Creative Groove in the new Office space

These last few weeks have been fun with the adventure of setting up a new office in my home. There was nothing wrong with the old office, but this space is just better for me. It also made me take a moment to really look at what I had in my office.

When I moved in 4 years ago, everything was just dumped into the office and shoved in anywhere I could find space. Now with a new space, new storage, and more stuff it was time for a big clean up, sort, & organize.

I'm nowhere near done but making steady progress. I'm excited to keep organizing but also to decorate the space to be both efficient and inspiring! I want to come into the space and feel energized about working, connecting, creating, and learning every single day!

I started with an empty space with one key feature I didn't have downstairs...a big, beautiful window that allows me to watch my daughter play in the backyard, watch birds darting in and out of our bird houses, and see the flowers groing in the garden. It let's me feel connected outside my 4 walls. It also lets in light. Beautiful natural light just pours in and helps me stay positive all day long!

20140427_065109

The first thing I did, of course, was set up my desk & computer right next to that beautiful window. For a few days, that's all there was. The rest of my office sat in tubs, boxes and piles all over the family room floor.

20140427_065057

Then, I came home one day and found this on the office floor...

20140507_061926

My Fiance had heard me saying I needed to pick some of these up to get my stuff organized in the office. I was stoked because I knew I could get started.

Then, the next night I walked in and found this...20140509_054049

While I was out, someone had built my shelves for me and I was ready to rock and roll!

Now a few weeks in, the office is still a mess as I arrange and rearrange items on the shelf but I'm starting to turn my thoughts towards decor. I have one painting already hanging (an original piece by Shannon Moyer-Szemenyei from SweetStellas). I know I will need bulletin boards or magnetic white boards for the various pieces of paper and notes on projects on the go. This time though, I want to make the space more inviting. More Inspiring!

Enter the wall art shop at Chapters with works from Minted. I love browsing these beautiful images and works of typography and have a few favourites in mind for my office.

I can't wait to pick up a few of these pieces, and some beautiful frames and get them on the frame ledges above my desk!

What else would you add to make a space both efficient and inspiring? I'd love to hear your thought so jot them down in the comments below.

May Blog Renewal thanks to #BelleLive

Okay, I know I know...It's Sunday evening so why am I on the blog writing to you? Because I'm excited to share with you. I hope you'll take a moment to read on to this short post and get involved in the conversation!

May is here and while the May flowers the old saying promises may have not arrived yet, the season of renewal has arrived!

Last month, I planted the seeds for something fabulous - An Etsy store that allows me to share my art and make it available to people all over the world!

This month, it's time for renewal. There are certain aspects of my business that need an infusion of energy and vision.

One of those things is right in front of you and I right now, my blog!

When I first began blogging, I was energetic and enthusiastic about it and each and every post just radiated with that passion. As time went on, I let the blog take a back seat.

This month I've started the journey to creating the blog that you as my fabulous readers deserve by diving into a course on my favourite online learning site, CreativeLive.

I spent 3 full days with the fabulous April of Blacksburg Belle virtually in her Build a Successful Creative Blog course learning to love my blog again, write what matters, and connect with my community!

I'm so excited to review this workshop, do the homework, and make changes. The changes may start slow and small (I've already made some, can you see them?) but I promise you, by the end of this month I will present you with a refreshed version of the Rebecca Nash Photography that will become the resource and community I dream of sharing with each and every one of you!

Want to have a say in the changes? Tell me in the comments below all about your favourite parts of the blog and the things that you'd love to see me lose. Got a big idea? Throw it out there, I might just fall in love with it.

Renovation & Renewal: Month Two - Home

It's month two and more changes are coming!

This month I'm still looking at the Studio Space. I spend a fair bit of time in my office and studio, as do my clients, so it's important to me that it gives a great impression.

This week I've been traveling and had the opportunity to get into new surroundings (and stores) for added inspiration. This inspiration has lead to new ideas of what I want my studio to be.

Now here are the changes I can't wait to start making to The Home Studio: - Remove the Dark Green Carpet and Replace with a light toned laminate or hardwood flooring - Paint! The black walls help to prevent extra light bouncing around but it's so dark! I'm looking at going to a light grey to lighten it up (if I start adding too much colour it does funny things to peoples skin tones) - New couch or slipcover - looking at a nice ivory or linen colour. Something light and neutral - Bright textured/patterned throw pillows on the couch (pillows say polish, fun, and comfort to me) - Replace the wood table with a nice glass coffee table for extra lightness - Get some framed work, an Uppercase living quote, and decorative pieces up on the walls - Pick up some small decor items to add life to the space - And so much more!

And what wishlist would be complete without outlining the someday dream. Here's Mine!

The Dream Studio: - Large exhibition space to showcase my own work but also other local artists & photographers - Office space with printing, framing, and work spaces as well as a reading corner - Dressing Room & Bathroom for clients (think old hollywood style - Vanities, couches, Clothing Racks, etc - Large Studio with Large Windows for Natural Light work (and a way to block the light too when needed) plus prop storage space (maybe a separate room) - Lounge area (couches, coffee tables, comfy chairs, table & chairs set etc) for consultations & ordering sessions. - Glass walls for a more open and bright feel

Do you have a room like this in your house? A room that you have you wishlist for now but your dream list for someday? Tell me all about it in the comments below!

Renovation & Renewal: Month Two - Relationships

Good Morning! Last Month I shared the realizations I had come to in regards to my relationships especially with the two most important people in my life my boyfriend and my daughter.

Around the same time as that post, I had the pleasure of taking a trip for a long weekend with my other half upon his return from 6 weeks away. It was amazing! The laptops stayed off, the phones were away, and we reconnected. We talked, we laughed, we learned (museums & galleries), we ate, we walked, and we loved. It was just what we needed. It's been a long time since I felt so close and connected to him. Amazing!

This month I'm looking forward to connecting as a family. With our hectic schedules, shift work, and commitments we often spend any family time we do have in front of the TV. This month however, we are off to warmer weather to celebrate my daughters birthday with Family Fun!

There will be a one week vacation on the blog but I will be back after easter with stories and inspiration to share!

Renovation & Renewal: Month Two - Business

Good morning friends! I'm thrilled and excited to reveal my arrival...the Mini Plus Piece from Marathon Press!

I loved these adorable little pieces the moment I saw them. I loved the flexibility of these folded pieces as something new and different from anything I've done before.

Renovation & Renewal: Month Two - Health

Wow...What a month!

First of all, Thank you to all of you who have followed my progress on twitter & facebook. Thank you for the support, encouragement, and for sharing your stories with me. This month I have needed it more than you can imagine.

The month of February started with great success reaching a 3 year low of 158.5 lbs (12.5lbs lost - yahoo!) followed but the return of my hunny after 6 weeks away and our trip together (great for the relationship, bad for the waistline going back up to 165lbs in 4 days). Upon returning from our trip I was able to quickly shed most of the weight but then I got stuck! At 161/162lbs I stopped dropping the weight. I have gone up and down over these last two weeks hitting 160 at the low end and 163 at the top end but mostly hanging around the 161/162lbs.

As March comes upon us I'm excited to share some new goals with you...

1. On June 22nd, 2013 I will step on stage for the first time as a competitor in the Bikini Division of the UFE Showdown here in London. Yes, you read that right, I'm going to step on stage in a figure competition in a bikini! Talk about terrifying!

I have a lot of work to do before this will be a reality. Tighten up the diet, push through the plateaus, and tone the crap out of my body. It's going to be work, but it's going to be fantastic! My goal is not to win, but to step on stage proud of what I achieved.

2. To become a Fitness Instructor & Personal Trainer. I have learned so much in this process and I'm eager to share this knowledge and amazing feeling with others. I have taken the first step in discussing this with the program director at my local YMCA. This past weekend I spent my weekend with an amazing group of people as we completed our YMCA Fitness Basic Theory Course. Up next for me...Zumba Instructor Training in May!

What goals have you made for your nutrition, fitness and health?

Renovation & Renewal - Month One: Home - Part 2

Okay so remember that DIY project I did with the Mason Jars? I absolutely love them! They make a great addition to the home studio and really liven things up.

After making this project last week though, I kept looking at them and thinking something was missing.  I finally figured it out! They are awesome on their own but with a little help from some kraft paper, ribbon, and eco friendly stamps I could really personalize them to me and my business.

I admit to having a rather large collection of scrapbooking items, and among those items are a variety of stamps. I love the look of a rubber stamped image (especially if you go light on the ink for an vintage feel) or beautifully embossed image (with a little texture & shine). I used a bit of both to create the personal touch.

The result? Beautiful hand stamped tags which show some things that matter to me.

Love, Dream, Celebrate, Create

What do you think? How's your favourite way to use your rubber stamps?

Renovation & Renewal - Month One: Home

This month I came up with the to do list. This list includes all the projects I want to do around the house. That was the easy part. Then came the tougher part...

What would I need for Supplies? How Much Would they Cost? Where would I get them? Can I do the project myself? If not, Who can I get to help? How much time will I need?

With all this information all written out I started to create a plan based on both the time and money available for these projects.

Month One: Spruce up the studio with inspiration and little changes! Enter my friend Wendy Pelham - and Uppercase Living!

Wendy has introduced me to the beautiful line of Uppercase Living Vinyl Decor sayings. I love the styles, versatility, range of colours and complete customization of these vinyl sayings. I can't wait to put something similar to this on the studio wall!

"Elegance is not about being noticed, it's about being remembered" Giorgio Armani

This Month's DIY originally comes from Lilyshop's Blog - DIY Spray Painted Mason Jars Project.

I'm a bright and energetic person (most of the time) and some days in the studio I feel like it doesn't fit me. Now how to spruce up the space?

I took three empty pasta sauce jars and turned them into a new set of decorative vases to help add a little more liveliness to my photography space. What do you think of the final product?

Renovation & Renewal: Month One - Relationships

I can't tell you how excited I am to share this week's post with you.

One of the areas of my life that I value above all others is my relationships. Two in particular mean the world to me. My relationship with my daughter Alyssa. And my relationship with my wonderful spouse Ross.

London, Ontario Photographer Rebecca Nash and Family

These two people form the foundation to my entire life and without their love and support I would cease to be the person I am.

The problem is...I've been so busy and stressed that I've taken them for granted. I've failed to nurture these relationships the way I know I should. I am not proud of this fact. While I've lost balance in many areas of my life, this is the area where it pains me most to admit my own failures, but, until I admit those failures I cannot move forward.

Starting this month, I'm taking action to make sure these most prized people in my life feel my love and support at all times. This means committing to three major things.

1) A monthly date night where Ross and I can get away from the phones, the computers and the distractions of our daily lives to connect, enjoy each others company, and create happy memories that help us through the tough times.

2) A nightly reading time and monthly date night (or day) with my daughter Alyssa. A time everyday where she has my undivided attention as we snuggle up close and share an adventure with the characters in our books. Plus a day when we create the itinerary for the two of us to spend dedicated time together doing the things we love.

3) At least one family day per month when the three of us share a day of fun and family time. It can be playing board games on the living room floor, chasing butterflies through the butterfly conservatory, playing in the park, or going on a new adventure. As long as we share the experience together!

What commitments have you made to value your relationships with those your treasure most?Yours Enthusiastically Rebecca - Rebecca Nash Photography

Renovation & Renewal: Month One - Health

This is where we get all the ugly stuff out there. Here goes... I have been eating crap (take out, chocolate, chips, highly processed foods, cookies, baked goods, and more!) without any form of moderation.

I haven't been in the gym in a year for a real workout.

Here's my before picture ( It's actually from week 3 because I forgot to take a before :S - I can't believe I'm actually putting this out there)

This is me on Jan 21st - down 2" of my waist, 1" off my hips, & 3lbs

Four weeks ago I began this journey in earnest. I'm trying to remember that little changes can bring big results. My goals for the next month are... 1) No Chocolate (other than chocolate protein powder cause it's the only one I have) 2) No Take Out or Fast Food 3) Meal Plan - Shop By The Plan - Stick to the plan 4) Prep meals ahead of time for convenience 5) Add more fruits and veggies to everyday 6) Carry water everywhere 7) Pilates Everyday for Strength & Calming (20 Mins) 8) Workout 4+ days per week - Mon & Weds is 1 hour Zumba, Tues & Thurs is Strength Training Curcuit...more on Fri & Sat whenever possible 9) Put away the scale & tape measure. Measure with the way I feel, and the way my clothes fit with weight and measurements only once per week at most!

After 4 weeks I achieved some results including - More Energy - 4+ Fruits & Veggies Per Day - Lost 6lbs - Down 4.5 total inches (3.5 inches waist, 1 inch hips, 0 inches bust) - Sleeping and Waking at a regular time daily

Here's my One Month Progress Photos....

This is me on Dec 30th - down 3.5" off my waist, 1" off my hips, & 6lbs since Jan 1st

I can't wait to see the results next month! What changes have you made in 2013 so far?

Renovation & Renewal in 2013

It's a new year, and at the beginning of the year I knew this was going to be a year of change. One of the biggest things I wanted to change was my body. No this isn't about poor me I'm fat. This is about the way I feel (though losing weight always feels good too).

Looking back just a few years ago, I felt different. I woke up energized and ready for the day. I felt optimistic, strong, healthy. I drove my friends and co-workers crazy (in the best sort of way) with my tireless energy and optimism. I slept soundly every night.

Now, a few short years later...I have trouble getting out of bed. I feel slugish all day long. I lack the energy and enthusiasm most days that was a cornerstone of who I was. I suffer from frequent headaches and an additional 20 some odd pounds of laziness and junk food around my midsection. I sleep poorly at night.

As I type this I am reminded of just how much of a difference there is. Many things have happened during these years. I met and fell in love with an amazing man who has supported me and my beautiful daughter. I bought my own house, and then sold it to share a home with my boyfriend as a family. I began my own business. So many wonderful things.

However, there is always the downs also...my business did not thrive as quickly as I had hoped. My spouse received a layoff notice. I started part-time work on the side. I stopped working out. I stopped my healthier eating habits. I was hit with health issues. Stress became an even more significant part of both mine and my families daily life.

There are some things I cannot change, but there are many things I can.

This year it's time for renovation and renewal of so many areas of my life including my health (healthy eating & fitness), my business (new focused direction & renewed passion), my home (my sanctuary of family), and my relationships (with my daughter, my spouse, and myself).

Join me as I share my journey in all these areas with both my triumphs and my failures and the realizations I know will come along the way.
